Nostalgia /nostálja, n. sentimental yearning for a period of the past
Initially I struggled with this brief as it required me to think about the future, something I've grown hesitant to do. I prefer to approach life one moment at a time. Further contemplation acknowledged that my thoughts tend to drift to my past memories. So began my journey...
Universal elements are connected in a web of life: from smallest human cells to infinite galaxies, all are equal and exist in relationship to one another. These relationships extend throughout the Universe, including the physical and metaphysical worlds. Exploration into inspirational images of human brain cells, far-off galaxies and black holes, pushed me to venture beyond my previous studies, creating a complex construction where exuberant color meets a curvilinear form; evocative of the feminine. May this talis(wo)man act as a portal to manifest a spirit of optimism for our future, a rebirth, a universal love. May it encourage within us a yearning to experience higher consciousness through expansion, connectedness, love, energy, joy, optimism, a sense of wonder, a sense of magic; and if nothing else, question “what the fuck is this?” Not everything we experience makes sense, not everything easily explained. Can we feel if we've never truly lived the experience? If there can be a sense of nostalgia for something we have not experienced firsthand—as in the case of worlds created by writers, artists and creatives whose works may inspire in us a longing for a life that existed and ended before our lives ever began—can there also be a sense of nostalgia for what's yet to arrive? A yearning for a more enlightened future.
