Outnumbered

Outnumbered is a mixed media project from a larger body of work surrounding identity, loss, new beginnings and self-discovery. The text, covered in charcoal, is pulled from a combination of emails sent to me from multiple white friends after the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Receiving these emails, ignoring these emails, laboriously writing back to these emails, forced me to observe how these tensions felt in my body. By sitting uncomfortably and making massive amounts of space for the anger and disappointment, I was able to arrive with compassion at my own shame and guilt for how long I tolerated these unhealthy dynamics. Facing these sad truths and harsh realities helped release a lot of pain which ultimately helped me tune into a deeper sense of power and ease.

My interpretation of Dear Future
I am devoted to what my future feels like rather than how it appears. In order to feel peace in my body, I had to get cozy with uncomfortable feelings. I had to befriend accountability. Facing the discomfort helped carve space for acceptance, better discernment, more agency and a solid sense of empowerment. This release generated an alchemy of pleasure, liberation, lighthearted joy, deeper connections and radical inner peace. Feeling safe in my most intimate relationships, especially the one with myself has underscored the value of a regulated nervous system. The Dear Future concept reminded me that by protecting my peace in the present, I am setting myself up for success in the future.
