“Dear Future”: A guided meditation

Sharing mindful moments, as part of a meditation, or in daily living, is often an act of relationship. One’s relationship with the future shifts perhaps when it becomes one of care and hope. In other words, when the future is not simply “future”, rather “dear future”, the dynamic evolves into a more mindful one. As human beings, we likely are never not thinking about the future. Recognizing that our mindful moments now have everything to do with how we respond and/or react to what will come, it felt profoundly meaningful to share some mindful moments in a guided meditation practice with what I hope will indeed be a future dear to all.

My interpretation of Dear Future
“Dear Future” is a reminder that we are in an inseparable relationship with something that has yet to come to fruition, that affects all of humanity and the earth, and also has everything to do with the present moment, including our reactions and responses in it. In fact, the past, present, and future are inseparable as a narrative. As the poet Muriel Rukeyser once wrote: “The universe is made of stories, not atoms.” Taking time to explore our narratives in the present moment and to meet who we are when we slow down has everything to do with what roles we play in the future. We are already connected to the future and the future is already connected to us. Deepening awareness around this point is one of the single most important things that one can do.
